  1. My Father was with the Royal Regiment of Canada. He was in Littlehampton from June 1942 until the Normandy Landings of 1944. The Royal Regiment was not part of D-Day but were deployed on July 5, 1944 and continued the Liberation of France, Holland, Belgium and into Germany; until the war’s end on May 8, 1945.
My Father spoke little of the war. I was born Oct. 5, 1946.
But he did speak of the Golf Club and in finding your book online, I see reference to it.
My Father’s name was Russell Charles Cumberland.
I would love to hear from you.

  2. Thank you Elizabeth for your interest, how exciting that my essay is being read in Canada. The information about Canadian troops in Littlehampton came from the book ‘Wartime Littlehampton’ by Iris Jones which was published by the Littlehampton local History Society. I have looked through the book and there is nothing else in it about the Canadian troops. The Royal Regiment of Canada was stationed in South Eastern England (Littlehampton, Chichester, Brighton, Southampton areas) from October 1942 to September 1945. You can see their locations here:

The main book about the Canadians in the war is “The half-million: the Canadians in Britain, 1939-1946” by Charles Perry Stacey, Barbara M. Wilson University of Toronto Press, 1987 .
I would love to know what your father said about his posting.
    Best wishes
    Hilary Greenwood
